Dental implants replace missing teeth for a natural look, feel, and function in Newport Beach, CA

Tooth loss affects more than just the way your smile appears. In addition to the negative effect missing teeth have on your confidence, they can also lead to oral health problems, causing your other teeth to shift in your mouth, bite problems, and an increased risk of gum disease. At Newport Dental Arts, we are committed to offering our patients in the Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Corona Del Mar, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, and surrounding communities with a variety of options to meet their dental needs, including dental implants to replace missing teeth.

What are dental implants and how do they work?

Dental implants are a modern way to replace one or more missing teeth. The implant itself is a small piece of titanium or zirconia that is about the shape and size of a screw. It is surgically placed into your jawbone, where it then undergoes a fusion process called osseointegration with the bone to form a strong, stable foundation for your new tooth. Once it has healed, a small connecting piece called an abutment is placed on top of the implant, and a custom-made, natural-looking dental restoration such as a porcelain crown completes the implant.

Benefits of dental implants

While there is no denying that dental implants look great when they are complete, the benefits of dental implants go far beyond their terrific, natural appearance. In fact, dental implants are considered the “gold standard” when it comes to tooth replacement because of their oral health and functional benefits:

  • Stability: Dental implants closely mimic a natural tooth root, making them the most stable tooth replacement option available because they are held firmly in place in your jawbone – you can eat whatever you’d like without worry, and no special care is required!
  • Bone health: When you lose a tooth, the underlying jaw bone naturally deteriorates over time due to a lack of force being placed on it (similar to muscles that atrophy after lack of use). A dental implant prevents this bone loss from occurring because it stimulates the bone when you are chewing like a natural tooth does.
  • Versatility: From mini dental implants to full mouth dental implants and nearly everything in between, dental implants are incredibly versatile and can be used to replace either a single missing tooth or multiple teeth, as well as support multi-tooth restorations such as dental bridges or dentures.
  • Youthful appearance: Missing teeth not only make your smile look older but also cause a “sunken in” appearance in your cheeks. When you replace your lost tooth, it provides a better structure for your facial features and can take years off of your appearance.
