“Xerostomia” is not the sound of a sneeze or the name of a lost city in the Amazon. It is actually the clinical name for the condition known as dry mouth. It is not the most serious oral health issue you can face, but it needs to be addressed.
Dry mouth is characterized by a lack of saliva in your mouth. Saliva is much more important than you might think. It helps to cleanse the mouth of the bacteria and food debris that causes tooth decay, as well as neutralize harmful acids in your mouth and teeth. If you drink fluoridated water, your saliva contains trace amounts of fluoride that will strengthen your tooth enamel.
There are several causes of dry mouth. Tobacco and alcohol use can contribute to dry mouth. Dry mouth can be the symptoms of medical problems, and can also be a side effect of certain medications. You may have a dry mouth if you are experiencing a dry sticky mouth or tongue, cracked lips, trouble eating and speaking, cracked lips or irritated gums.
There are different ways to treat dry mouth. The simplest way is to drink more water and avoid tobacco, alcohol, and caffeinated drinks. Sugarless gum and hard candy can help relieve dry mouth, and you can also use a humidifier. Additionally, your dentist can prescribe artificial saliva or medications to help address the problem.
